Optimizing Your Content - What You Could Be Doing Wrong

Optimizing your content is a fundamental part of publishing content online.  After all, what is the point in working hard on your content if you are the only one who will ever have set eyes on it? 

Not that long ago, it was enough simply to season your copy with a few well chosen keywords.  These days, Google and all of the other major search engines are more interested in quality content as well as keyword rich content. 

As a result of recent search engine algorithm changes, you may need to extend your content marketing techniques and do a little more to ensure your audience sees your content.

  • Stop writing for the search engines - As we touched on above, you need to start writing for your audience first and the search engines will follow. If your content is being viewed, liked and shared, higher search engine rankings will naturally start to emerge.  Use keywords still, but more sparingly than you have in the past. 
  • Less is definitely more - Churning out lots of mediocre content is not going to get you anywhere.  Spend time on your content so that it is of the highest standard and shares information and compelling information with your audience. 
  • Follow up on your social media posts - Many people make the mistake of pushing out content to their social media business pages and accounts and then forgetting about it.   Visit this content often.  Tweet about it, reference it in status updates and make sure your audience knows it is there.  With so much happening on social media, it can be very easy for your community to miss your posts.  Share consistently and often.
  • Not planning content in advance - If you publish content without any planning you could miss out on some great opportunities. For example, by planning your content well (a 12 month plan is great!) you can include links to previous blogs, be ready to publish content to match the seasons or key events in your business calendar and get a headstart on your content when you can.
