Promote Your Employees So they Can Promote Your Brand

Akio Morita, co-founder of Sony, said, “I emphasize this—no matter how good or successful you are or how clever or crafty, your business and its future are in the hands of the people you hire.” Your employees are the foundation of your brand. Showcasing your team members and introducing them to your audience creates relationships with customers. Don’t make your “About Us” page an afterthought. “How-to" content is a popular motif for almost every industry. Readers enjoy these online tutorials and educational learning materials. Google reported back in 2015 that 91% of smartphone users turned to their device while completing tasks and called these “micro-moments”. An estimated 100 million hours of “how-to content” was consumed in North America alone that year. In 2020, the number is, undoubtedly, a lot higher. Consumers want to know how to do things and want to do themselves or at least understand the process. Digital marketing can tap into that need by producing content to solve problems. Taking advantage of these micro-moments through “how-to” content can deliver significant results for your branding and visibility.

Sharing Your Brand Story through Content

In today’s marketplace, it’s not enough to have a great product or service. The best brands go much deeper and connect to consumers on an emotional level. Just think about the brands you personally love and buy. Talkwalker, a social analytics firm, just released its list of the world’s favorite brands. You’ll probably never guess which international icon tops the list - Lego. Other brands that made the top 10 were - The Container Store, Celebrity Cruises and Four Seasons Hotel. Most people played with Lego as children, which is one reason we connect so readily with the product. As adults, we buy Lego for our children and maybe even invest in some of their kits for ourselves. It’s a brand we love because it’s part of our story. Every brand on the Talkwalker’s Top 10 list has at least one thing in common. They all use storytelling to connect with consumers as part of their brand love message.

An Email Subject Line that Called for Action Against Racial Inequality

The changes that have occurred since the May 25 death of George Floyd have been ground-breaking. On Juneteenth, the AP Stylebook changed to capitalize Black when it’s used in a racial, ethnic or cultural sense. Statues that glorified white supremacy have come down. Millions of dollars have been pledged to fight racial inequality at every level. School Boards are rethinking how they’re using local police. These changes are certainly overdue. One viral email from a Goldman Sachs managing director demonstrates that every person and business needs to address racial inequality. Content is such a big part of your marketing strategy, it pays to take a deeper look into your own emails, blog posts and other marketing material.

Your Content Must Reflect Diversity, Inclusion and Equity

The peaceful and not-so-peaceful protests in the past few weeks following the tragic death of George Floyd have revealed the systemic racial division across the United States. Fortunately, people all over the world, including here in Canada and several European countries, are recognizing that we have to work together to fight racism. We must speak out against police brutality, racist policies, and bigotry. Our children need to be taught to be kind and fair, regardless of race, skin colour, gender, or socio-economic status.

Think of content marketing like a first date. If all you do is talk about yourself, you’re unlikely to get a second date. People aren’t primarily reading your content to get to know your company. The conundrum is that to ensure your content is consumed and appreciated, you must have a well-planned SEO strategy. To get content that meets your SEO needs, you need a content strategy and a way to convey that plan and its objectives to the copywriter.

Communication is a two-way street. We share our message to get a response. How often do we forget to listen to the response? In our daily scramble to create new content, we often forget about checking to see what our audience thinks. We get so focused on Google rankings that we neglect our real audience – the customer. Plus, it opens the door to some exciting opportunities in your content marketing strategy.

Burger King may have had good intentions with it’s 2021 campaign for International Women’s Day, but it’s tweet “women belong in the kitchen” came off as sexist. You’ll Find An Enthusiastic Audience in Exchange!

Entrepreneurs cultivate discipline. It takes a lot of grit to get up every day and punch the clock without a boss looking over your shoulder. Most small business owners have their must-do list of things that have to get done, regardless of feelings and inspiration. Sadly, content marketing often gets relegated to that have-to-do chore list. It’s typically done out of discipline instead of enthusiasm. Gordon Parks, photographer, film director, musician, writer, and co-founder of Essence magazine, said, “Enthusiasm is the electricity of life. How do you get it? You act enthusiastic until you make it a habit.” If you’ve lost your joie de vivre in your content creation, here are some ways to find it again.

Creating great content doesn't happen by accident or under duress. Go back to your content strategy and find a new approach to creating valuable content.
