Compelling Blog Post Titles

Okay, so we have used this blog post title on purpose, but simply to highlight a problem we have all had in the past - using clichéd titles when in a tight corner or when the creative juice just isn’t flowing.
The good news is that coming up with genuinely insightful blog post topics is not as challenging as you might think. Even a good old list blog post can be great if the content itself is interesting. Here are five ideas that should help you out when that creative spark has fizzled out.

  1. The Problem Solver
People turn to the web when they need problems solved. Why not solve a pressing problem for them with your blog? This is a great idea and one you can turn to time and time again. First you need to understand the problems your target audience is facing and ways in which your product or service can solve them. Whether it is presenting research in an engaging way, giving advice on DIY, sharing tips on saving money or sharing an eBook, you’ll impress your visitors and give them something they can use. Your blog post title should tell your audience right away that you have a solution to their problem.
  2. Turn to Stats for Inspiration
Everybody likes statistics. They seem to add weight to otherwise lifeless copy and just one statistic could give you some really creative ideas for a great blog post. Statistics are a great way to headline your blog posts too. 88% of our readers agree!
  3. Share the Things that Work for You
Got a great time-saving tip? Do you use a suite of tools that you think your target audience could benefit from?  Writing a post about the things you have tried and tested (especially free things) can be a great way of warming your audience to you, especially if you are not blatantly endorsing or advertising a tool or service.
  4. Ask Your Audience for Advice
If you’ve got a problem you can’t solve, why not turn to your readers for advice? This not only gives you a little break from the keyboard, but you’ll find that your audience is a savvy bunch who would love nothing better than to share their knowledge and experience with you. You can also ask your audience what they would like to read about and whether they would like to guest post for you. Reach out to your audience in the blog post title.
For example: “Looking for Indoor Landscaping Ideas—Here’s What We Tried Already”. As a landscaping company, you can share all the creative ideas you have but show that you are very open to ideas from customers and that you follow a process of creative collaboration.
  5. Start A Debate
On the flip side of asking for advice is the idea of starting an argument or at the very least, a lively debate. This can really kick off some strong discussion and could bring more readers to your door, purely out of curiosity at first. What is all the fuss about? Why are they arguing? Arguments are not always negative and can inspire new ideas, new posts and new readers. A title such as, “Today’s Marketing Forecast: Big Box Brands Will Die Without Customer Experience Management” will stir up a juicy debate.

But Play by the Rules and with a Clear Conscience

My last blog post was the first time I ever wrote about a deeply personal experience. It certainly was heartwarming and overwhelming to receive so many kind and encouraging messages from family, friends, co-workers, clients, and even some past students and interns. Thank you! Some business associates and clients also responded with feedback on my comments about the “AI-generated content elephant in the room”. Healthy discussions ensued and I want to clarify that I am not against AI-generated content. If your small or medium-sized business has time and budgetary limitations, and you cannot hire a content agency, professional copywriters, and SEO content writers, then AI tools may be the way to go. I’ve summarized the key questions clients are asking about this.

Include Your POV to Encourage Conversion

Imagine how differently we'd see Star Wars if it was told through the eyes of a stormtrooper trying to get his next promotion or through Chewbacca's point of view. The reader of a story interprets the tale through the perspective of the narrator. Choosing an engaging and valuable point of view (POV) is essential to the narrative. You may not think of your content as a novel or a movie, but you're still telling a story through your blogs, email newsletters, videos, and other forms of digital content. Offering a unique POV with your online content can help make your brand stand out.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness,…” The opening paragraph of “A Tale of Two Cities” is considered one of literature’s greatest openers. Back in 1859, in times when reading books was possibly one of the few indoor entertainment activities people engaged in, Charles Dickens had the skill to hook the reader right at the start. Of course, he also had the skill to finish with a flourish — “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.” That closing line is among those most praised in literature.

Getting back to the point—you can transform every introduction into an irresistible hook that commands your audience's attention. Here are some ideas for creating an opening that will resonate with your audience and stay with them.
