Creating Content for Your Mobile Audience

You Survived Mobilegeddon…So Far—Now Make Sure You Stay Visible!
Now that your mobile-friendly site is benefiting from the updates made by Google’s newest algorithm, Mobilegeddon, be wary of getting too hung up on the design and layout of your mobile site. In order to be explored by mobile users, you have to create engaging content people want to read.

Here are two important steps to help you stay not only mobile-friendly, but also visible to your target audience:

1. Don’t Forget SEO Basics.

Research proves that people view the top search results on the first page of top search engines like Google, and do not stick around to see what’s beneath the top few results. What applies to desktops, applies to mobile devices like smart phones and tablets.

Most people don’t spend time scrolling through search results past page one, especially not on a mobile device while they are out and about. In fact, when it comes to mobile, where on page one you are matters more than on a desktop. On a desktop, more search results are visible as the screen is larger. With the smaller screen of the mobile, fewer search results will be shown to the user without them scrolling down.

It is crucial to create high-quality content with keywords targeted to capture your specific audience. You need to rank at the top, now more than ever, in order to be seen.

2. Write Smarter, Not Longer.

Users searching for products and services on mobile devices are less likely to scroll or swipe through multiple pages of content to get to the main point. Writing smarter means that you keep what is most important about your piece of content, and eliminate what isn't. This doesn't mean you should cut out useful information just for the sake of making your piece shorter. For people browsing on a small, mobile device, it is important to have the main message right at the start with short and powerful titles. Capturing the attention of your mobile-using audiences is key to keeping them engaged and following you.

With Google’s new algorithm, “Mobilegeddon”, website owners everywhere are stepping up their game now more than ever. We know that the future of the search results is dependent on the mobile user. Once your site is up to Google’s standards of mobile accessibility, don’t fall down the ranks of the search results. Remember to create interesting, quality content that is optimized for your on-the-go audience.

Even if you don't do it for the SEO benefits, keep in mind that mobile traffic surpassed desktop browsing in 2014. In 2015, we will see more of that happen. Most of your traffic will be on mobile and it's only rising as smart phones become more accessible in Africa and parts of Asia.

But Play by the Rules and with a Clear Conscience

My last blog post was the first time I ever wrote about a deeply personal experience. It certainly was heartwarming and overwhelming to receive so many kind and encouraging messages from family, friends, co-workers, clients, and even some past students and interns. Thank you! Some business associates and clients also responded with feedback on my comments about the “AI-generated content elephant in the room”. Healthy discussions ensued and I want to clarify that I am not against AI-generated content. If your small or medium-sized business has time and budgetary limitations, and you cannot hire a content agency, professional copywriters, and SEO content writers, then AI tools may be the way to go. I’ve summarized the key questions clients are asking about this.

Include Your POV to Encourage Conversion

Imagine how differently we'd see Star Wars if it was told through the eyes of a stormtrooper trying to get his next promotion or through Chewbacca's point of view. The reader of a story interprets the tale through the perspective of the narrator. Choosing an engaging and valuable point of view (POV) is essential to the narrative. You may not think of your content as a novel or a movie, but you're still telling a story through your blogs, email newsletters, videos, and other forms of digital content. Offering a unique POV with your online content can help make your brand stand out.
