Content is King—everyone knows that. You know you need to be active in ensuring that fresh, high quality, informative content is reaching your audience. How should you do that and what are the issues you should consider when creating and marketing content? Reasons Why You Should Create Quality Content

  • To establish expertise
  • To reach prospects
  • To answer questions from your prospects and customers
  • To help your organic search ranking
  • To generate leads and sales
  • To encourage (return) visits to your site

What Qualifies As “Content”?

Blog posts, articles, comments, video, audio, tweets, presentations, white papers, podcasts, images, eBooks, webinars, testimonials, reviews, marketing collateral, brochures, manuals, How Tos, mobile apps, advertorials, contests, coupons, newsletters, and much more!

Dos And Don'ts For Content Creation And Marketing

  1. Do show you are an expert but don't say it. Definitely don't use the word 'guru'!
  2. Do be in it for the long-term, and don't expect instant results.
  3. Do speak the language of your target audience; don't use gobbledygook.
  4. Do create content about your areas of expertise; don't assume you know everything on any topic.
  5. Do use the expertise from other departments in your business; don't outsource everything.
  6. Do make content informational. Don't hard sell.
  7. Do create content regularly, and don't panic if it is not every day.
  8. Do be innovative with your content; don't stymie creativity.
  9. Do relate content to your sales funnel. Don't try to force people through the funnel; lead them
  10. Do test your content on your audience. Don't assume it will work without proper audience
  11. Do write original content. NEVER plagiarize.
  12. Do pay for high quality content if you are outsourcing. Don't skimp or else your reputation, sales and search rankings will suffer.
  13. Do have a content strategy but don't miss the chance to create relevant, topical and newsworthy content if the opportunity arises just because it is not scheduled.
  14. Do look at what topics are popular with your audience on high ranking and socially successful sites. Don't scrape it, use it as inspiration for your own content.
  15. Do use customer testimonials and reviews to help build trust; don't overwhelm your prospects with
  16. Do link to third party, reliable, authoritative content. Don't include irrelevant links or anchor text just to add popular keywords.
  17. Do focus on quality; don't write content just to bulk your site out.
  18. Do find good copywriters and proofreaders. Don't use just any writer—you need quality content.
  19. Do promote your content widely, but don't spam in your efforts to do so.
  20. Do develop a personality, and don't do so without understanding your audience.
  21. Do post opinions, commentary, etc. on newsworthy items. Don't be deliberately argumentative unless you are willing to handle the flak.
