The 5 Essentials of Effective Content Curation

So you’ve heard of content creation, but what about content curation? Well, if you use the web to share information of any kind, you are essentially a content curator. If you use social media to send Tweets or Facebook updates, you are a content curator and also a social curator.

What Is Content Curation?

Essentially, a content curator is one who ingests, examines and contextualises the content they see online to then organize that information into a format or onto a platform that others can easily understand. This could be in the form of retweeting a valuable snippet of information or sharing an insightful article with your target audience.

In other words, a content curator is like that person with the metal detector on the beach searching for ancient relics and valuable items so that they  can share those gems with their online audience. However, content curation is so much more than just clicking on a “share” button. It’s all about following these simple best practices so that you can share the information you find in the most effective and positive way. Your online ‘content museum’ will be a powerful and sustainable showcase if you can be the most resourceful curator!

  1. Use The Three ‘C’s
Create, contribute and collect. This is the mantra you should be using for your online content. By creating your own content, asking others to contribute and collecting and organizing a quality, curated collection, your target audience is more likely to stay and come back for more.
  2. Try To Follow A Schedule
When you attract repeat visitors, they are going to start expecting regular content from you. The trick here is to stick with a realistic schedule and not one you have difficulty keeping up with. In fact, curating two quality links a day and a quality blog post every week is a schedule that most people can manage and will ensure your content is consistent and regular.
  3. Curate On Multiple Platforms
When it comes to curating meaningful content for a wide target audience, you’ve never had it so good. You don’t need to wait for your visitors to come to you. With social platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Pinterest and Twitter at your disposal, you can take your content contributions to them.
  4. Be Fair
Whenever you curate good content or a quality link and share it with your audience, don’t forget to mention the original source. This gives you more credibility and shows you are taking the time to curate high quality information for your visitors.
  5. Engage, Engage, Engage
When you find those interesting items to share with your target audience, don’t forget to participate and engage. Build relationships with fellow curators and bloggers by retweeting them or commenting on their posts. Do the same with your target audience and respond to their comments on your website or blog.

Content curation is a simple, yet effective way of sharing high quality content and giving your website and social platforms authority and credibility.  Looking for a partner to help create and curate engaging content? When you apply that to a creative endeavour like content marketing, you might be undervaluing some of your content creative efforts. It can be expensive to create content, from scheduling videographers, photographers, models, or even having quality copywriters write a blog post. Why Your Content Must Be the Burning Question for Your Audience!

Google is constantly adding search features that help users get relevant information quickly. The “People Also Ask” feature has been around for a while, but it seems to be gaining traction as it’s being used in more searches. PAA boxes are another type of digital real estate, increasing your reach on a particular subject if you can get featured as an answer to a PAA question. Make it part of your content marketing strategy, even if you don’t rank for it immediately. The results might be slow, but they are worth waiting for.

And Why It's Important!

Featured snippets on Google are valuable digital real estate for your content marketing assets. These snippets are quick answers to search questions. Although snippets are designed to provide answers for the user without having to clickthrough to the page, Hubspot found that content with a snippet had a higher click-through rate of 2x or more, making this search feature important to your SEO strategy. If you can get your copywriting featured as a snippet, it builds your authority and visibility.
