Yes, YOU Can Write Your Website Content

You are an expert in your field, which gives you a lot of credibility and authority when creating content for your business. You don’t have to be a copywriter to share your story. You simply have to know how to tell it to your reader. Here are some of our best tips to help you create high-quality website content.

Write for Your Audience

Website content is mistakenly assumed to be what you want to tell current and potential customers. In reality, it should be what your customers want to know. People don’t care about your brand or you; at least, not until you win their trust. They go to the internet to find solutions to their own needs. Successful web copy is about the reader, not you. Identify your audience. Writing to a woman shopping for a gift for her husband would be different from writing to the man shopping for himself. When you’re writing digital content, it doesn’t help to write for the masses. Identify each persona in your target audience and write content accordingly. Persona mapping is an important step in your content marketing strategy.

Make Your Copy Remarkable

Across your industry, you can find the same copy online, over and over. What’s worse is that your audience is also finding the same old, same old. So, how do you make your online copy stand out. Remarkable copy isn’t telling your entire story in one piece. It’s infusing your personality and style into your writing to make your reader want to continue reading. Here are some tips:

  • Lead off with your best hook to grab your reader’s attention.
  • Write like you would to a friend.
  • Don’t use a lot of industry jargon or generalizations.
  • Use active voice. It sounds more personal. Active voice- I will clean the house on Saturday. Passive voice – The house will be cleaned on Saturday.
  • Use “you” to address the reader. Use “we” or “I” when talking about your business or yourself.
  • Avoid scare tactics. Create a sense of urgency, but not by generating fear.
  • Write in short sentences. Use section headings and bullet points. Write for the ‘scanner’, not the ‘reader’.

Add a Call to Action (CTA)

When you create website content, you have a goal in mind. You want the reader to take action, whether that means to make a purchase, sign up for your mailing list or subscribe to your blog. Give your reader a specific call-to-action to encourage them to act. The CTA moves the reader down your sales funnel, so give your reader the next action based on the content you just provided them.

Proofread, Edit and Optimize

Today’s readers are savvy. Well-written content isn’t enough. It needs to be error-free, so check for factual accuracy, as well as grammar, spelling and punctuation. It’s always a good idea to have another pair of eyes look over your content and edit it for mistakes. Content editing takes it one step further to make sure the writing is cohesive and understandable. If you can’t find anyone to read your work, let it sit for a couple of hours before going back over it yourself. An SEO writer can help you optimize your content for search rankings, but when you write for real people, Google will get your intent. Take care to see that your content does not offend readers. Make a conscious effort to be more diverse and inclusive in your content.

But Play by the Rules and with a Clear Conscience

My last blog post was the first time I ever wrote about a deeply personal experience. It certainly was heartwarming and overwhelming to receive so many kind and encouraging messages from family, friends, co-workers, clients, and even some past students and interns. Thank you! Some business associates and clients also responded with feedback on my comments about the “AI-generated content elephant in the room”. Healthy discussions ensued and I want to clarify that I am not against AI-generated content. If your small or medium-sized business has time and budgetary limitations, and you cannot hire a content agency, professional copywriters, and SEO content writers, then AI tools may be the way to go. I’ve summarized the key questions clients are asking about this.

Let Your Local Retail Business Outshine Big Box Stores!

It’s a common misconception—bigger is better. As a local retailer, you know that isn’t true. Include Your POV to Encourage Conversion

Imagine how differently we'd see Star Wars if it was told through the eyes of a stormtrooper trying to get his next promotion or through Chewbacca's point of view. The reader of a story interprets the tale through the perspective of the narrator. Choosing an engaging and valuable point of view (POV) is essential to the narrative. You may not think of your content as a novel or a movie, but you're still telling a story through your blogs, email newsletters, videos, and other forms of digital content. Offering a unique POV with your online content can help make your brand stand out.

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness,…” The opening paragraph of “A Tale of Two Cities” is considered one of literature’s greatest openers. Back in 1859, in times when reading books was possibly one of the few indoor entertainment activities people engaged in, Charles Dickens had the skill to hook the reader right at the start. Of course, he also had the skill to finish with a flourish — “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.” That closing line is among those most praised in literature.

Getting back to the point—you can transform every introduction into an irresistible hook that commands your audience's attention. Here are some ideas for creating an opening that will resonate with your audience and stay with them.
