Creating SEO Content is an Ongoing Process

The age-old question of which comes first, the proverbial content chicken or the SEO egg? We don’t have to debate this issue. The answer is easy. It doesn’t matter which came first. What matters is how we balance content quality and readability with SEO best practices. The key is to deliver relevant information for customers in a user-friendly package while making sure the search engine bots evaluate and rank your content for search visibility. Complement your content strategy with your SEO strategy cohesively instead of thinking of them as two separate entities.

Create Content for Voice Search

Media in Canada reported, not too long ago, that 88% of Canadians use voice search at least once a week. Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant continue to become increasingly popular. Use keyword phrases in your content that match voice search. Voice search is more commonly used as a way to get information rather than the actual shopping, but that trend may change fast. Create a foundation for voice searchers using SEO content directed at them.

Use Social Media

Content for social media doesn’t always directly translate to SEO results, but you should incorporate social media into your content strategy. Posting to social media drives greater audience engagement and more traffic to your site, which sends good signals to the search engines. By promoting your best content on social media, you can also get your readers to spend more time on your site. This, too, improves your search rankings.

Edit with SEO in Mind

The best SEO writer edits their work through a different lens. Editing for SEO is about ensuring content relevancy, strategic placement of target keyword phrases and checking for keyword stuffing. It’s important to maintain readability while using every relevant opportunity for a keyword. Check content titles to ensure relevancy and to make sure the right questions are being answered. Having an editor go through content with an eye toward SEO can improve content for readers and search engines.

Analyze Your Competitor’s Content

Never undermine the importance of analyzing your own content to find out what’s working and what isn’t. It can also help your own SEO strategy to analyze what your competition is doing. Browse through local listings and some in other cities around the country. Although you should NEVER plagiarize, you can certainly get some good ideas to use on your own site.

Publish with SEO in Mind

Content marketing isn’t finished until you publish what you create. Finalize your content with a title tag, meta description and alt text for any visual elements you’re including. Include keywords in the meta data for search engines and for readers. Do a final check to see what the reader sees. Is it compelling and engaging? Does it sound credible and relevant? Have you used a reader-friendly, easy to scan format and structure? Skip the school essay format; your readers are likely going to scan this very rapidly on their smartphones!

Keep Updating Content

The search engines look for fresh content as part of your SEO strategy. Your readers also want new content. It can be difficult to keep providing relevant content, even if you have an in-house copywriter. Partner with a content agency to keep the search engines and your audience engaged. So You Can Create Content that Google Will Find Easily and Rank High

It’s estimated that Google processes about 63,000 searches every second. When you consider that most adults conduct an average of at least three to four searches a day, it’s evident why you want to rank well in search engine results pages. Many copywriters may use keywords to boost SEO but may not fully understand how search works. Google’s main purpose isn’t to function as a marketing tool to promote your product or service. Instead, it exists to gather and organize the most useful and relevant information for the user. Understanding this can help make your SEO content be more accessible and useful.

When you go to the library, you don’t ask the librarian to tell you what to read. You want to read what interests you. In the same manner, when you create content, publish what your audience wants to read, not what you like. Okay, maybe the analogy is a bit outdated, or even alien to many of us. What library? Who goes there? Everything’s online! But you get the idea. Your customers have questions. They want answers. Here are three ways your copywriters can get ideas from your audience.

Prioritize Quality, Consistency and Frequency

"Easy reading is damn hard writing." - Nathaniel Hawthorne, American novelist and short story writer
It can take a skilled writer up to 6 hours to craft a well-written 2000-word blog post. Engaging writing takes time. Time many business owners and their teams simply don't have. Outsourcing your blog writing can be one way to generate new content without taking time away from managing core aspects of managing your business.

Why are you creating content? In addition to education and entertainment, content can increase brand awareness, generate leads, and establish credibility. But at its core, marketing content has the responsibility to deliver a return on investment (ROI) in the form of sales. Whether you have a brick-and-mortar location or an e-commerce store, your marketing dollars need to convert to real income. One way to find success with your content strategy is to think about your customer’s journey.

Something we hear quite often from clients is, “We have a creative team, so we can write our own content”. The confidence and enthusiasm are wonderful to see. But here’s what makes content creation so challenging. You can put a lot of effort and creativity into your content, but without audience engagement, it’s like cooking up a storm worthy of a banquet without any guests. The true measure of successful content isn’t what you put into it, but what your audience does with it.

According to eMarketer, Google Home is the most popular smart speaker in Canada, with Amazon Echo right behind. It’s estimated that almost 20% of the population used smart speakers in 2020. Even more important, voice technology is on the rise, as Media in Canada reports. Over 88% of Canadians are using voice search. If your business isn’t addressing voice search in your SEO content, you could be missing out.

Imagine yourself in a real-life social situation. Will you stand around and talk to others in the room even if they aren’t listening or seem bored and disinterested? Umm, awkward. It’s no different in the online world, but many of us don’t realize it. If your Facebook posts are talking but nobody is listening, your social content is not doing a very good job.
